Les King, former Governor and Trustee for the Carolinas District of Kiwanis International spoke about Kiwanis as a global organization focused on its members who are helping kids in some way. Les emphasized each phrase of the Kiwanis motto "Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time. You can just tell by the expression on Les's face that he is totally committed to the idea of Kiwanis!
Les talked about "Who we are?" and "What's in it for me?" with recollections of events that changed his attitude about the things we do for kids and the feeling of satisfaction in knowing in some little way you have helped make a kid's life better.
Les on new members:
- "If you have money but little time - we need you"
- "If you little money but much time - we need you"
Of course as former Governor and Trustee, Les had to talk about the Carolinas District. One of the points he shared with us was 'What does the District do for my club? A question asked of Les by one of our members several years ago. So Les took this back to District and the outcome was a re-structuring of District in regards to a new program called "Club Counseling Days." District volunteers reach out to local clubs and their officers by providing training in all things Kiwanis but in the local clubs meeting hall, i.e. the District comes to the help clubs who request it.
For this writer, Les's 'story' really added a feeling of belonging to a wonderful group of people who are "in it for the kids!"
